US President Donald Trump has told his inner circle and members of his cabinet that Elon Musk will be stepping back in the coming weeks from his current role in the White House, a report has said.
A report in The Politico said that though the US president remains pleased with Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, both men have decided in recent days that it will soon be time for Musk to return to his businesses.
The development comes as some people close to Trump in the White House and allies outside have become ‘frustrated’ with Elon Musk’s unpredictability and view him as a political liability, the report said.
A senior US administration official has said that Musk is likely to retain an informal role as an adviser and continue to be an occasional face around the White House grounds. However, another official cautioned that anyone who thinks Musk is going to disappear entirely from Trump’s orbit is “fooling themselves.”
Trump had tasked the Tesla CEO to lead efforts to cut government funding and dismantle various US agencies as a special government employee.
