As many as 26 MBBS students have been suspended while the admission of 14 students for the academic year 2024-25 has been cancelled for adopting unfair means for the entrance exam held last year.
The National Medical Council (NMC) directed the immediate suspension of the 26 MBBS students found complicit in the paper leak for the NEET exam held last year.
The action by NMC came ahead of the NEET-UG 2025 exam scheduled to be held on Sunday. According to a report by The Times Of India, quoting sources, action was taken against the students based on the findings of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The probe agency is investigating the cases related to the NEET UG 2024 examination.
“Given the severity of these violations and their potential to undermine the credibility of the medical education system, the NMC has issued directives to the concerned medical colleges and institutions to immediately suspend the 26 MBBS students found to be complicit,” the report stated, quoting sources.
Students Debarred For 3 Years
Additionally, admissions of 14 more students for the academic year 2024-25 were cancelled. An NMC official said that such misconduct not only compromises the sanctity of the examination process but also poses a direct threat to the standards of medical education and public trust.
The cases were identified as unfair mean (UFM) by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the agency that conducts the NEET examination. The cases were scrutinised in detail by NTA’s UFM Committee, following which 42 students have been debarred for three years i.e. 2024, 2025 and 2026 from taking the NEET-UG exam.
Moreover, nine candidates have been debarred for two years, 2025 and 2026 while the candidature of 215 candidates who appeared in the NEET-UG exam last year has been put on hold in light of the ongoing probe.
A controversy erupted last year after 67 students who appeared for the NEET-UG exam for admission to various medical and dental courses scored a perfect score of 720 marks. This raised suspicion as only a few students had got the full marks the previous year, leading to the alleged exam paper leak triggering widespread protests.
