
The flood situation across several Northeastern states remained critical on Sunday, with continuous heavy rainfall affecting thousands and prompting a high-level response from the Centre. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, as well as the Governor of Manipur, and assured them of all possible assistance to deal with the crisis.

78,000 People Affected In Over 15 Districts Of Assam
According to officials, over 78,000 people in more than 15 districts of Assam have been affected by the floods. Ten major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger mark, prompting the Central Water Commission (CWC) to issue an ‘orange bulletin’.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X, “Hon’ble Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji called me a short while ago to enquire about the floods in Assam and has offered all possible assistance to deal with the ongoing situation. I have briefed him on the measures being taken and we are grateful for his concern and support.”
So far, eight people have died in floods and landslides in Assam. Road transport, train services, and ferry operations have also been disrupted. A portion of National Highway-17 was submerged in Kamrup district’s Chaygaon area, while ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli were suspended due to the swelling Brahmaputra.
The CWC reported that several rivers have breached danger levels, including the Dhaleswari (Hailakandi), Rukni (Cachar), Katakhal (Hailakandi), Barak (Sribhumi), Buridehing (Tinsukia), Kushiyara (Sribhumi), Dhansiri (Golaghat), and Kopili (Nagaon).
The Northeast Frontier Railway cancelled multiple trains for two days due to waterlogging on the Baraigram–Dullabcherra section. The Guwahati–Dullabcherra train was short-terminated at Baraigram and cancelled beyond that point until Tuesday.

In Manipur, torrential rains and overflowing rivers caused flooding and landslides that affected 3,802 people and damaged 883 houses over the past 48 hours. The Indian Army and Assam Rifles rescued more than 800 people, including evacuating All India Radio Imphal, and constructed temporary footbridges to aid movement in inaccessible areas, as per AIR News.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, accompanied by Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, visited flood-affected areas and instructed officials to implement pre-emptive measures and ensure relief and evacuation efforts are carried out effectively.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been put on alert, officials said.

In a separate incident, Indian Air Force personnel rescued 14 people trapped in the swollen Bomjir River on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday. Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapneel Paul said, “In a daring rescue operation, 14 persons trapped in the swollen Bomjir river were rescued by an IAF helicopter.” The operation, carried out with assistance from Arunachal Pradesh officials, ensured the safe return of all those stranded.
Multiple agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, police, and fire services, continue to be deployed across the region as rains persist. Assam CM Sarma noted on Friday that the state was facing an “abnormal situation” due to the incessant downpour and massive cloud cover over large parts of the Northeast.
