As per the National Center for Seismology, the location of the earthquake was New Delhi at a depth of five kilometres. The epicentre was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan.
That region, which has a lake nearby, has been experiencing smaller, low-magnitude quakes once every two to three years. It recorded an earthquake of 3.3 magnitude in 2015, an official said. A loud sound was also heard when the earthquake hit.
The national capital is prone to earthquakes and falls in Zone IV of seismically active areas of the country, which is the second-highest category.
Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal prayed for the safety of everyone.
