
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Russia on May 9 for the parade at Moscow’s Red Square to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russian news agency TASS reported on Wednesday, citing a military source.
The Russian news agency cited military sources to claim that the visit by PM Modi has a “high probability”.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning a visit to the May 9 parade in Moscow. It is highly likely that it will take place,” the report quoted the agency’s source as saying.
Notably, the report mentioned that dicussion is underway regarding the participation of Indian military personnel.
“The issue of participation in the parade on Red Square of a ceremonial unit of the Indian armed forces, which should arrive at least a month [before the parade] for rehearsals, is also being worked out,” the military source told TASS.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that several invited countries have confirmed their participation in the upcoming events in Moscow on May 9 to mark the Great Patriotic War’s anniversary.
Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President, noted that foreign leaders from many countries will be invited to Moscow to participate in the celebration of May 9, TASS reported.
He also indicated that the Russia will be glad to witness the participation of foreign guests who understand what the Victory Day means for Moscow.
PM Modi had visited Russia in October, 2024 at the invitation of the Vladimir Putin to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, which took place in Kazan under the chairmanship of Russia.
This visit has a greater significance as it will come amidst the talks between the US and Russian officials towards ending the Ukraine war. The first round of these talks was held in Riyadh earlier this month.
PM Modi had made a strong pitch for peace in his meetings with Putin and Ukrainian President Vlodmir Zelenskyy in his earlier visits.
