FIR Against UP MLA As Wife Alleges ‘Repeated Attacks’, Mental Trauma, Seeks Protection

An FIR has been registered against Uttar Pradesh’s Kunda MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh, alias Raja Bhaiya, at Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave police station following a complaint by his wife, Bhanvi Singh. She accused him of subjecting her to years of physical and mental abuse, leading to severe injuries.

According to The Times of India, Bhanvi Singh alleged in her complaint that Raja Bhaiya had inflicted cruelty on her for several years, “My life is in danger, and I need protection,” she stated. She also accused her in-laws, including her mother-in-law, of harassment.

According to The Times of India, Bhanvi Singh has been living separately from Raja Bhaiya for the past few years. She had previously approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Delhi State Legal Services Authority with similar grievances but had refrained from pursuing legal action. In August 2023, she filed an affidavit in a family court, accusing Raja Bhaiya of domestic violence, abuse, and extramarital affairs spanning nearly three decades.

‘Repeated Attacks Have Left Me Traumatised’: Raja Bhaiya’s Wife Demands Protection

The Safdarjung Enclave police confirmed to Dainik Bhaskar that a case has been registered under Section 498A of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The matter was initially with the Crimes Against Women Cell before the FIR was lodged.

In her complaint, Bhanvi Singh stated, “On 20 March 2023, I had lodged a complaint with the NCW against my husband for cruelty and violence but later withdrew it, hoping things would change. However, that did not happen. The continuous cruelty over the past year and the threats to my life forced me to file a complaint”, as quoted by Dainik Bhaskar’s report.

She further alleged that she had faced neglect and ill-treatment at her marital home. “My mother-in-law interfered in my married life, and my husband never paid attention to it. Despite enduring all the atrocities, I remained silent. Over the past year, repeated attacks on me have left me traumatised. I need protection,” she added.

Bhanvi Singh revealed that she had to leave her education after marriage and mostly lived alone, as Raja Bhaiya spent most of his time at his ancestral home in Lucknow. She had filed for divorce in Delhi’s Saket Court in November 2022, citing cruelty. She also accused him of domestic violence and extramarital affairs and stated that since September 2020, she had been denied entry into their home, the report stated.

According to the report, Bhanvi Singh, the third daughter of Kunwar Ravi Pratap Singh from the Basti royal family, was born on 10 July 1974. She studied in Basti and Lucknow before marrying Raja Bhaiya in 1995. The couple has four children—two sons, Shivraj Pratap Singh and Brijraj Pratap Singh, and two daughters, Raghavi and Brijeshwari Singh.

Raja Bhaiya was around 25 years old at the time of their marriage, but in recent years, their relationship had deteriorated, leading to their separation. Bhanvi Singh currently resides at her Delhi residence.

As per reports, she is wealthier than Raja Bhaiya. During the 2017 elections, Raja Bhaiya declared assets worth ₹14 crore in his affidavit, out of which ₹7.2 crore belonged to Bhanvi Singh, while he owned assets worth ₹6 crore.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
