
Vishal Gawli, who was accused in the rape and murder case of a minor in Maharashtra’s Kalyan died by suicide in the early hours on Sunday in his prison cell, said jail officials.
Gawli, who was accused of kidnapping, raping, and murdering a 12-year-old girl hanged, was lodged in Taloja jail for the last three and a half months. He died by hanging himself at 3:30 am using a towel inside his said, as per the jail officials.
His body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem, they added, reported ANI.
Gawli allegedly abducted the girl with the help of his wife Sakshi Gawli from the Chakki Naka area of Kalyan on December 23, 2024, while she was playing outside her home.
He allegedly raped and killed her after which the couple took the body in an auto-rickshaw to Bapgaon on Kalyan-Padgha road and dumped it there, according to police.

The minor’s body was recovered on December 24 and Sakshi was arrested the same night. Vishal was nabbed the next day from Buldhana district. Sakshi who worked in a bank, is Vishal’s third wife.
Maharashtra government had announced that the case would be tried in a fast-track court and appointed a special public prosecutor.
In February this year, an official said that the investigation was nearing completion and discussions were underway with senior lawyer Ujjwal Nika to strengthen the case and make it water-tight.
A report by the Times of India stated that earlier, Gawli was framed in a Pocso case but had secured bail citing mental illness and produced a certificate showing he was autistic.
A police officer had said investigation was underway to find out how he obtained the medical certificate.
