Gujarat Titans post strong total after solid opening stand

Hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clashed with Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 39 of the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) on Monday, April 21. Notably, the game was played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

After being invited to bat first, GT openers Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill gave a thundering start to the visitors. The pair set a solid platform with their 114-run stand for the first wicket. After an early vigil on a slow pitch, both batters accelerated perfectly. Notably, in the powerplay, Gujarat scored just 45 runs but picked up the pace later. While Gill scored 90 runs off 55 balls and narrowly missed out on a century, his partner Sudharsan contributed 52 off 36 balls.

After Sudharsan’s departure in the 13th over, Jos Buttler provided the final flourish with an unbeaten 41 off 23 balls. GT managed just 60 runs in the last eight overs despite their strong foundation.

KKR falter in middle overs

When it came to KKR’s bowling performance, their spinners leaked runs, conceding 96 in just 11 overs and failing to take a single wicket. As a result, Gujarat Titans posted a competitive total of 198/3 on the board.

In reply, KKR had a dismal start, losing Rahmanullah Gurbaz with just two runs on the board. Sunil Narine tried to inject momentum with some attacking shots, but in the sixth over, Rashid Khan dismissed him for 17.

Following his dismissal, left-handed batter Venkatesh Iyer joined captain Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. The pair batted cautiously, keeping the scoreboard ticking with the help of occasional boundaries. With the required run rate climbing, they looked to accelerate in the death overs while keeping wickets in hand.

Titans’ bowlers seal the game as KKR collapse late

However, by the 13th over, both batters were back in the hut. Rahane, who looked set to take the game deep, misjudged a Washington Sundar delivery and was stumped by Jos Buttler shortly after completing his fifty. Soon after, KKR lost their way as Andre Russell was also stumped. Pacer Prasidh Krishna bowled a brilliant 17th over, dismissing Ramandeep Singh with a stunning return catch and then foxing all-rounder Moeen Ali with a sharp delivery. KKR were reduced to 119/7 after 16.3 overs.

With 60 runs needed off the final 12 balls, and Rinku Singh and impact player Angkrish Raghuvanshi at the crease, the target was out of reach.

Among the notable bowling performances for the Gujarat Titans, Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each while maintaining tight economies. Sundar, Siraj, and Kishore chipped in with a wicket apiece, while Ishant Sharma also added his name to the wickets column by dismissing Rinku in the final over. In the end, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the match by 39 runs. With this win, GT continue their winning streak as the table toppers of the IPL 2025.
