Days after 26 people were attacked in Pahalgam, Ganderbal District Police on Friday identified and detained a suspect after a video went viral on social media. A tourist woman, in the video, alleged that a man had questioned her about her religion while showing his photograph.
According to India Today report, the police identified the suspect as Aiyaz Ahmad Jungal, a resident of Gohipora Raizan. He works as a pony service provider at Thajwas Glacier in Sonamarg. The suspect is under sustained interrogation, and legal action is being initiated as per the due process.
According to the report, Ekta Tiwari from Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur has claimed that she interacted with the suspected terrorists whose sketches were released after the Pahalgam attack. She said that she encountered two of them during a mule ride on April 20 while visiting Pahalgam.
Tiwari showed a photo on her phone of a man wearing a maroon jacket and pajamas, claiming that he was one of the suspects. She said that he had asked her about her religion. On being asked if she knew his name, she said that she had not asked.
She also claimed that the photo was taken in Baisaran Valley. Tiwari also added that her friends were scared and unwilling to speak, but WhatsApp group screenshots showed that others in her group also recognised the suspects from the sketch.
According to her, the same men asked her about her name and religion during the ride. She was then asked if she had ever visited Ajmer Dargah or Amarnath. The man also asked her if she preferred Hinduism or Islam and also if she had read the Quran.
