IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer smashed with INR 12 lakh penalty for Code of Conduct breach in CSK vs PBKS

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined for maintaining slow over-rate against Chennai Super Kings in Match 49 of the Indian Premier League 2025. This was the first time under Iyer’s captaincy that PBKS have been accused of maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing season.

Despite his team ending on the winning side, the penalty will add to the misery of the PBKS management, as their skipper has been fined a whopping sum of INR 12 lakh for the offence, which came from the breach of Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

“Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday,” a release by the league on Thursday stated.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 Lakh,” it added.

The visiting side ended up winning the encounter in the last-over thriller against CSK, and moved second on the points table after the emphatic victory at Chepauk. Iyer & Co. have also solidified their stance for a top-four finish in the season to qualify for the Playoffs. The Mumbai-born was also the Player of the Match for his brilliant 

“Love chasing on any field and I feel I thrive when there is a big total on the board and you need to take the charge and build the momentum for the next batters. Try to play on my instincts and back myself. (On his away form) I don’t want to curse it at the moment, I’m enjoying as much as possible, trying to stay in the present and just reacting to the ball. Once I get to know if there is a big total, does not matter home or away, I keep the same approach, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I know if I stay out there, I can chase down any target,” the PBKS skipper said at the post-match presentation.

“Lately I have been batting a lot in the nets and facing the quick bowlers with the new-ball, I know the ball will skid on and come at a great pace. It has given me immense confidence. This is one part which I have really worked on. The attitude I keep is high all the time whenever I enter the field. These four boxes I tick, and you see the reflection on the field,” he added.

“[On the humidity] More than the batting, the fielding was difficult as I was running from long-on to long-on. The over-rate also we had to maintain and I had to think in the nick of time. The humidity factor also, probably a lot more to any other field I have played on. We had a chat in between when Ricky came in and told we don’t have to leave it till the last, we have to up the ante as they have a few amazing death bowlers in Pathirana, Khaleel and they have immense experience in their squad, the approach is to take on the bowlers and basically back ourselves,” he said further.

When I got in, I need to play a few balls and see how the wicket is playing. I played 10 balls and decided it’s time to take on the bowlers. Prabh and Priyansh, the starts they are giving, they have been fabulous in their approach and it is not that they are slogging. They are playing amazing cricket and hopefully they continue with that same momentum,” Iyer concluded.
