[WATCH] ENG vs IND 2025: Mohammed Siraj produces stunners to remove Root, Stokes in same over on Day 3

India made a solid start to Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. Already in a strong position after a historic 269 from captain Shubman Gill and a brilliant Day 2 bowling effort, India’s star pacer Mohammed Siraj further removed Joe Root and Ben Stokes in successive deliveries in just the second over of the day.

The right-arm seamer first got rid of the veteran English batter, Root. Bowling from around the wicket, Siraj bowled a delivery on the leg stump line that tempted Root for a glance. The ball moved late and got the edge of Root’s bat, carrying safely to Rishabh Pant. The former England captain walked off for 22.

In the following delivery, Stokes, playing his first ball, was struck by a short-pitched delivery outside off. The England captain got a faint edge on it, handing Pant another catch behind the stumps. Notably, it was Stokes’ first golden duck in Test cricket. Jamie Smith, who faced the hattrick-ball pushed the delivery for a boundary down the ground.

England on back foot early on Day 3

Meanwhile, Day 2 of the Test match belonged to India, first with the bat, thanks to Gill’s double-century, and then with the ball. Akash Deep, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI, made an impact late on Day 2 with two wickets in two balls, before Siraj had Zak Crawley caught at slip.

With the visitors now already sending five English batters back in the pavilion, they will be confident of dismantling the tail soon. At the time of writing, England’s scorecard read 109/5 with Harry Brook (42*) and Jamie Smith (14) at the crease and are trailing by 478 runs.
