iPhone 17 Air’s ultra-thin battery sparks mixed expectations on performance

iPhone 17 Air’s ultra-thin battery sparks mixed expectations on performance

The upcoming iPhone 17 Air is rumored to feature an exceptionally thin internal battery pack measuring just 2.49mm—roughly half the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro’s battery—according to new leaks from Korea.

The information, posted by the account “yeux1122” on the Korean Naver blog, includes an image allegedly showing the iPhone 17 Air’s battery alongside that of the 17 Pro. Earlier claims from the same source suggest the Air’s battery capacity will be around 2,800 mAh, with other reports indicating it may remain below 3,000 mAh. Details on the iPhone 17 Pro’s battery are still unknown, though the Pro Max is expected to feature a 5,000 mAh or larger pack.

This marks one of the smallest iPhone battery capacities since the iPhone 12 and 13 models, which also dipped below 3,000 mAh. Despite the slim size, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously noted that the device will house a “high-density” battery. Reports from Asia further suggest that Apple’s supplier, TDK, could introduce advanced silicon-anode battery technology for the model later this year.

The iPhone 17 Air is believed to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, with a reported overall thickness of 5.5mm and a weight of about 145 grams—comparable to the iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 13 mini.

However, battery life expectations remain uncertain. The Information reported that only 60% to 70% of users might get a full day’s use without recharging—lower than the 80% to 90% seen in current iPhone models. Apple is reportedly planning an optional battery case to address this issue.

In contrast, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that battery performance could still match current iPhones thanks to hardware and software efficiencies. The 17 Air is rumored to include Apple’s new power-saving C1 modem and omit an Ultra Wide camera, potentially freeing up internal space for battery improvements.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 lineup, replacing the “Plus” model with the ultra-thin Air, around mid-September.
