“The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, including at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement. The surviving detainee is reported to be in critical condition at a hospital.
No ICE officers were harmed during the attack, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News. “We believe he was shooting at law enforcement and detainees from an apartment building,” she added, confirming that detainees were among the victims.
Dallas police confirmed that officers responded to a call around 6:40 a.m. on North Stemmons Freeway. “Someone opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building,” police spokesperson Officer Jonathen E. Maner said in an email, as per news agency AP.
