The Indian team departed to Australia from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Wednesday, October 15 for the upcoming ODI series Down Under. The Shubman Gill-led side is scheduled to play three ODIs, beginning on October 19.
Most of the travelling contingent, including support staff, was already stationed in Delhi after participating in the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Players not involved in red-ball cricket, such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer, joined the squad ahead of departure.
Earlier, clips of Kohli arriving in Delhi and Rohit leaving from Mumbai went viral on social media. As expected, fans turned up in large numbers at the airport to bid farewell and wish the Indian team luck for their crucial assignment Down Under.

The upcoming series will mark India’s first ODI assignment since their triumphant 2025 Champions Trophy campaign. It is also Gill’s maiden series as ODI captain, following his recent succession of veteran batter Rohit. India suffered a 1-2 series defeat in their last ODI tour of Australia. During that series, the team managed to avoid a whitewash but fell short in a high-scoring contest.
Since then, the squad has undergone a major revamp, with a renewed focus on senior players Kohli and Rohit, who are in the twilight of their careers. The ODIs will be played at the iconic Adelaide Oval and Sydney Cricket Ground. Following the ODI series, India is also set to face Australia in a five-match T20I series, an important precursor to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“The World Cup is still two and a half years away. We need to stay in the present. Hopefully, the two have a successful tour, and more importantly, the team has a successful tour,” Gambhir said in the press conference in Delhi.
