Ashes 2025-26: Josh Hazlewood ruled out of Perth Test, citing hamstring injury

Australia has been hit with yet another blow for the 2025-26 Ashes, with senior pacer Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the opening Test in Perth. What initially appeared to be a minor concern has now been confirmed as a hamstring strain, forcing the experienced seamer to miss the first match of the series.

Hazlewood walked off during New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield clash against Victoria earlier in the week after complaining of discomfort. Early scans hinted at no serious damage, but repeat imaging conducted the following day confirmed a low-grade hamstring strain. Cricket Australia explained that early scans can occasionally underestimate such injuries, leading to the updated diagnosis. As a result, Hazlewood has been officially withdrawn from the Perth Test and will not travel with the squad.

His absence adds to Australia’s growing list of concerns, with captain Pat Cummins already sidelined due to a back issue, while fellow seamer Sean Abbott, originally picked as bowling cover, has also been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury in the same Shield match.

Hazlewood’s unavailability is particularly damaging given his importance in home Ashes conditions. With 295 Test wickets, he has been one of Australia’s most dependable players. He recently impressed in the white-ball series against India and looked promising in Sheffield Shield games before the latest setback.

“Initial scans Wednesday were clear of muscle strain, however follow-up imaging today has confirmed the injury. Early imaging can occasionally underestimate low-grade muscle injuries,” a CA statement said.

Michael Neser added as Hazelwood’s cover

Meanwhile, Scott Boland had already been seen to replace Cummins, but Hazlewood’s withdrawal has opened the door further for additional changes. South Australian quick Brendan Doggett, who has been in strong domestic form with two recent five-wicket hauls, is now a realistic contender for a surprise debut. Cummins himself recently mentioned Doggett’s impressive form, noting that he is well placed to be vying for a spot in that first Test.

Australia has drafted in Michael Neser as cover for both Hazlewood and Abbott. Neser, who made his Test debut during the 2021 Ashes in Adelaide, has played two Tests. While he may not yet be confirmed in the playing XI, his presence ensures Australia is not forced into rushed selections in an already thin attack. With Doggett in contention and Boland expected to feature, Neser is set to provide a steady hand if conditions demand.
