Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is in line to feature for India in their one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June, should he get the clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) medical team.
Bumrah is currently competing in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), having played in all 12 matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI). The right-arm seamer, who was named stand-in captain against the Punjab Kings, will be expected to play in two more matches in the season.
Sources close to the BCCI have revealed that the initial plan is for Bumrah to play in the Test match against Afghanistan. However, there is no chance for him to feature in the subsequent three-match One Day International (ODI) series against the same opponent.
“If the medical team appoves Bumrah’s workload is under permissible limits, he might play the Test match against Afghanistan. But there is no chance of him playing the ODI series. If there is slightest issue with his workload, he will be rested for the full series,” a BCCI source was quoted saying to the press, via NDTV.
Prince Yadav expected to get his maiden India call-up
Despite the Afghanistan series coming extremely close to the end of the IPL, India are not expected to make wholesale changes to their Test and ODI setup.
According to the aforementioned source, the selectors are looking to go for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler Prince Yadav in the ODI team. The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout IPL season, with 16 wickets to his name, the most for his side. This is the reason why he was not picked in the India A squad for their tri-series in Sri Lanka.
Shubman Gill, meanwhile, who is leading the Gujarat Titans to the latter stages of the tournament, is expected to captain both Test and ODI sides against Afghanistan. KL Rahul will be picked in the 50-over squad as the designated wicketkeeper, with Ishan Kishan likely to be named as his backup in place of the struggling Rishabh Pant.
India’s solitary Test match against Afghanistan is set to commence from June 6, with the three-match ODI series starting from 14 June.
