As India aspires to dominate global dairy, Amul prepares to push its presence overseas

Jayen Mehta, MD of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, said on the occasion of National Milk Day that the Indian dairy cooperative Amul’s successful model will not only be limited to India but will also be spread across the world, which is a proud moment for the country.

National Milk Day is observed on 26th November every year to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, regarded as the “Father of the White Revolution” in India.

India produces about one-fourth of the world’s milk, making it the largest milk producer globally.

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Cooperation, has started working on the White Revolution 2.0 programme to make India the “Dairy to the World.” The programme will run for five years, from 2024–25 to 2028–29, Reported by ANI.

“India’s dairy model has succeeded because of its cooperatives. It is a great source of pride that in 2025—the UN’s International Year of Cooperatives—Amul has been named the world’s leading cooperative,” he noted.

“With the support of cooperatives and the way they showcase the contribution of 36 lakh farmers of Gujarat who came together to build this brand, the model will be able to spread throughout the world, which would be a great achievement for India,” Mehta concluded.

Recently, India’s dairy sector received a major boost when the 56th GST Council approved a broad set of tax rationalisations on milk and milk products during its meeting on September 3, 2025.

Items such as butter, ghee, dairy spreads, cheese, condensed milk, and milk-based beverages are no longer in the 12 per cent slab but in the 5 per cent slab. Ice cream, which earlier attracted 18 per cent GST, has also been reduced to 5 per cent. Milk cans are now taxed at 5 per cent instead of 12 per cent.
