AUS vs SA 2025: South Africa bowl out Australia for the first time in T20Is

South African bowlers used the conditions to their advantage in the first T20I against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday, August 10, and bowled out the hosts for 179. The Australian batters also didn’t help their cause as they played some rash shots and threw their wickets away.

After Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first, Australia decided to go hammer and tongs from the outset. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, despite scoring rapidly. After Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis were dismissed cheaply, Cameron Green and Tim David belted 40 runs off just 16 balls. However, the Aussies lost three wickets in quick succession and slumped to 75/6.

David played a blinder of an innings and received good support from Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis down the order to take Australia to a competitive score on a two-paced surface. The Singapore-born smashed 83 off 52 balls, hitting four fours and eight sixes before eventually being dismissed in the penultimate over.

David got reprieves from Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis as the Proteas were unusually abysmal with their fielding display. However, the Australia batter deserves a lot of credit for the way he defied the odds and scored his runs under pressure.

In the last ball of the innings, Corbin Bosch effected a run out off his own bowling to send Nathan Ellis packing. This helped the Proteas bowl out Australia for the first time in T20I cricket. Kwena Maphaka was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa. He bagged four wickets and conceded just 20 runs in his four overs. On the other hand, Kagiso Rabada also used his experience to finish with impressive figures of 2/29 in his four overs.

While the fielding display wasn’t great, the Aiden Markram-led side will be happy with their bowling effort against a team which came into the contest on the back of a seven-match winning streak in T20I cricket.
