Blue Origin Mission with All-Female Crew, Including Katy Perry, Completes Sub-Orbital Space Tri

Blue Origin on Monday successfully completed a historic sub-orbital spaceflight with an all-female crew, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. The six-member team included pop star Katy Perry, who joined a diverse group of women for the brief journey aboard the New Shepard rocket.

The launch window opened around 8:30 a.m. CDT at Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in western Texas.

The mission, officially designated NS-31, was the company’s 11th human spaceflight and lasted approximately 11 minutes. According to Blue Origin, the rocket travelled over 60 miles above the Earth, surpassing the Kármán line — the internationally recognised boundary of outer space.

The flight crew included U.S. entrepreneur and helicopter pilot Lauren Sánchez — fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos — television host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn, alongside Perry.

In a post on social media a day before the mission, Perry wrote, “I’ve dreamt of going to space for 15 years and tomorrow that dream becomes a reality.”

First Ever All-Women Crew To Go To Space

Blue Origin stated that this was the first spaceflight in 64 years of human space travel to have every seat filled by a woman. The last such instance, according to the company, dates back to 1963 when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space during a solo three-day mission.

As the capsule reached microgravity, the six women unbuckled for a brief moment to experience weightlessness. During this time, Perry could be heard singing — a moment that resonated with audiences online.

Katy Perry sang ‘What A Wonderful World’ in space. Gayle King confirmed, “We’ve been asking her to sing ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’ and she said ‘It’s not about me. I want to talk about the world’. It was really special”

On the ground, Oprah Winfrey, who came to support her best friend Gayle King, was seen visibly emotional as the rocket launched.

Blue Origin, founded in 2000 by Bezos after his success with Amazon, has not disclosed the cost of the mission or who paid what. The launch comes just two months ahead of Sánchez and Bezos’s wedding in Venice. Bezos, who was part of the company’s first space tourism flight in 2021, accompanied the latest crew to the launch pad.

A handout photo shared by Blue Origin on its official X account showed the all-female team — Sánchez, Nguyen, Perry, King, Bowe, and Flynn — suited up ahead of their historic mission.
