Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammed Shami suffers injury scare, gets hit on his back against New Zealand

Pacer Mohammed Shami copped a blow to the right side of his back off the penultimate delivery of the first innings of the Champions Trophy 2025 clash between India and New Zealand, being held in Dubai, on Sunday, March 2.

At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Shami was desperately trying to add as many runs as possible in the last over after India’s top-order failed to deliver. The Bengal seamer hit a delivery down the ground and scampered back for the second run. Kuldeep Yadav was running towards the danger end but he was in a better position to make the crease first.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner gathered the ball and threw it to the striker’s end. However, the throw was a bit wayward and it hit Shami’s back as he was looking to complete the second run. The 34-year-old took a pause as he seemed to be in a decent amount of pain. The physios came out to check on the veteran as tensed Indian fans. However, Shami recovered quickly and took guard to face the last ball.

He tried to hit the ball out of the park to help India finish on a high. However, he failed to establish proper connection on his slog and the ball was safely grabbed by Glenn Phillips, who had another fine day in the field.
