Champions Trophy 2025: Virat Kohli Only 37 Runs Away From Breaking Tendulkar’s MAJOR ODI Record

Team India star Virat Kohli is on the brink of a major milestone in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The former India captain needs just 37 more runs to join the elite club alongside cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Notably, Kohli is on track to achieve this all-time record faster than both the cricketers.

Kohli, who currently has 13,963 runs in 285 ODI innings, needs just 37 more runs to become the first batter in the world to achieve the 14,000-run milestone in less than 300 ODI innings. Kohli needs to achieve the mark in his next 15 innings. However, it is highly likely that he will attain the feat in India’s very first match of the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.

Virat Kohli is also on the brink of becoming the fastest player to reach 14,000 ODI runs. With as many as 65 innings to achieve this milestone, he is well on course to set a new benchmark. If he accomplishes this feat, he will surpass Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara, the only two players to have crossed the 14,000-run mark in ODIs. Tendulkar reached the milestone in 350 innings, while Sangakkara took 378 innings.

Virat Kohli has not been at his best recently, but a solid half-century in the final ODI against England would have provided him the much-needed confidence boost. Despite a dip in his form, Kohli remains an integral cog in India’s batting lineup for the ICC Champions Trophy. A strong tournament from him could significantly enhance India’s chances of winning the prestigious event.  

India will kickstart their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a match against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. India’s second match will be the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23.
