The Congress faced backlash after posting an edited image showing an empty outfit resembling Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the caption ‘gayab’ (missing), criticising his absence from the all-party meeting on the Pahalgam attack.
In a post on X, Congress shared a photo (apparently) of PM Modi in a yellow kurta, white pyjama, and black shoes, but with the PM edited out, along with the caption, ‘In times of need, missing’.

Though the Congress did not mention the name of the PM in the post, and caption reads: “Disappears at the time of responsibility.” This followed after Congress repeatedly questioned the absence of PM Modi from the All Party Meeting for a briefing on the Pahalgam attack.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also raised the question of the PM’s absence. “The first question I raised… when the government convenes a meeting, the Prime Minister should be present. Since he was not present, we said it was not right,” he said, India Today reported.
BJP Condemned Congress Post
Responding to the Congress post, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia displayed the controversial image during a press conference on Tuesday and accused the Congress of being sympathetic to Pakistan.
The BJP, through its official X account, condemned the Congress post, claiming it echoed extremist slogans like “Sar Tan Se Juda” and accused the opposition party of devolving into “Muslim League 2.0, divisive, desperate, and directionless.”
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya also criticised the Congress on X, alleging that the post was a tactic to pander to the Muslim vote bank. He further accused Rahul Gandhi of promoting and excusing violent sentiment toward the Prime Minister.

Amid the backlash, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh defended the party’s position, telling ANI that PM Modi’s absence from the all-party meeting on the Pahalgam terror attack was a legitimate concern. He called for a special Parliament session, insisting that the PM should address the House on the matter.
“PM Modi was not present at the all-party meeting. We demanded on 22nd April that the all-party meeting should be held on this issue…PM Modi should participate in the discussions in Parliament and tell us what happened and how this terrorist attack took place. There is no political agenda. The Congress has only one formula- unity,” he said.
