CPL to return to Jamaica after six years with new franchise| CricTracker

The Caribbean Premier League CPL) is set to make a long-awaited return to Jamaica in the 2026 season, ending a six-year absence of T20 action on the island. The league confirmed that a new Jamaica-based franchise will be introduced, and four matches are expected to be played at the iconic Sabina Park, a venue that has been a significant place in Caribbean cricket history.

Matches hadn’t been hosted in Jamaica since 2019 after the former Jamaica Tallawahs franchise was relocated and rebranded ahead of the 2024 season. This significant return comes after productive discussions between CPL officials and the Government of Jamaica, with the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Ministry of Tourism both backing the move.

CPL CEO Pete Russell hailed the development as a major moment for the competition, underlining the importance of Jamaica in Windies cricket.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing the CPL back to Jamaica in 2026. Jamaica has a rich cricketing heritage and an unmistakable energy that makes it one of the most special destinations in the region. The return of a Jamaican franchise and matches at Sabina Park is something fans have been calling for, and we’re delighted to be working closely with the Government of Jamaica to make this happen,” he was quoted as saying by News Room Guyana.

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange said the tournament’s return will have a broader impact, after its return to the island.

“The Government of Jamaica is pleased to welcome the Caribbean Premier League back to our shores. This event goes beyond cricket, it supports economic growth, promotes our culture on a global stage, and inspires our young people through sport. We look forward to hosting players, fans, and partners in 2026 and delivering an unforgettable CPL experience rooted in Jamaican excellence,” said Olivia Grange.  

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett added that the CPL’s comeback aligns with efforts to bolster city tourism, while Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow emphasised the importance of restoring a franchise to one of the Caribbean’s most passionate cricketing homes.

“Everyone at Cricket West Indies is delighted to see CPL cricket returning to Jamaica. The island holds a special place in Caribbean cricket, having produced some of the finest players in our history and generations of passionate supporters who continue to inspire the game,” said Shallow. 

Further details about the new franchise’s ownership and squad will be revealed closer to the start of the 2026 season.
