The Delhi government on Saturday signed an MoU to roll out the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the national capital. With the MoU signed today, Delhi has become the 35th state/union territory to implement the health insurance scheme. West Bengal is now the only state which has not implemented the scheme. The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides free and cashless treatment for 1,961 medical procedures across 27 specialities, covering the costs of medicines, diagnostic services, hospitalisation, ICU care, surgeries and more. The card distribution will begin from April 10.

Under the scheme, the eligible families in the capital will receive annual health coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh – Rs 5 lakh from the Centre and the same amount as a top-up from the Delhi government. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Delhi government and the National Health Authority in the presence of Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, among others.
The National Health Authority is the apex body responsible for the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. Following the signing of the MoU, a special campaign will be launched to enrol the beneficiaries under the scheme. The BJP, which came to power in Delhi in February after a gap of more than 26 years, approved the implementation of the scheme at its first cabinet meeting, right after Gupta and six of her ministers took the oath of office on February 20.
Speaking on the occassion, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said that due to the conspiracies of previous governments, the Ayushman Bharat scheme could not be implemented in capital. The people of Delhi know how the public suffered due to the conflicts between the central and state governments, she added. There was chaos in Delhi, with people dying while waiting for treatment, and sometimes two people were forced to share a single bed, CM Gupta further said.
“Through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, people in Delhi will now be able to receive treatment at the hospital of their choice. Delhi residents will be able to get treatment for 1961 types of diseases. They can avail free treatment at more than 30,000 hospitals. In the first phase, more than 2.6 lakh people will be enrolled in the scheme. Starting from the 10th, the distribution of cards will begin,” Rekhta Gupta said.
