Earthquake Hits Delhi-NCR, Office-Goers Report Strong Tremors

A strong earthquake hit Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning. The epicentre is said to be near Gurawara in Haryana’s Rewari district and the estimated magnitude of the quake was around 4.4 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were felt around 9.04 am and lasted for a minute. The strong tremors sparked panic as people rushed outside their offices and homes.

Delhi-NCR witnessed such strong tremors on February 17 when a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the region.

Delhi Lies in High-Risk Earthquake Zone

Delhi falls under Seismic Zone IV, the second-highest classification on India’s seismic zoning map, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes.

The region frequently experiences tremors triggered by both near-field (local fault lines) and far-field (Himalayan seismic activity) sources. Experts have repeatedly warned that Delhi’s dense population, high-rise constructions, and unplanned urban sprawl make it particularly susceptible to serious damage in the event of a major earthquake.

NDRF Issues Earthquake Safety Advisory

Following strong tremors felt across Delhi-NCR, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has issued an advisory urging citizens to strictly adhere to earthquake safety protocols, including precautionary measures to be taken before, during, and after a seismic event.

Many residents took to social media, describing the tremors as one of the longest and strongest they’ve experienced in years. Several others described witnessing ceiling fans sway and furniture tremble before rushing outdoors.

Although no major earthquakes (magnitude 6 or above) have struck the Delhi region in the last decade, moderate tremors are not uncommon. Most recently, a 2.3 magnitude quake with an epicentre in South East Delhi occurred on June 8, causing no reported damage or casualties.
