US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company will invest more than $1 billion in new contract manufacturing operations in India, with a major manufacturing and quality facility to be established in Hyderabad, reported by ANI. Major expansion for Hyderabad’s pharma ecosystem
The announcement came after a delegation from Eli Lilly met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu at the Integrated Command and Control Centre in Hyderabad on Monday, October 6. The company’s decision reinforces Hyderabad’s growing position as a leading life sciences and pharmaceutical hub. The investment follows the launch of Eli Lilly’s Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad in August this year. The new facilities will expand the company’s manufacturing and global supply network, supporting medicines used to treat diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and autoimmune conditions.
The Hyderabad facility will also help enhance global production capacity, with the company planning to collaborate with local contract manufacturers and suppliers.
Telangana promises full support to investors
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy welcomed the investment, describing it as a strong endorsement of the state’s industrial potential.
“Telangana means business. Hyderabad is a global city. Our government will support and welcome all industries looking to invest here,” he said, assuring the company of full cooperation for future expansion.
Reddy thanked Eli Lilly’s leadership for choosing Telangana and recalled Hyderabad’s long-standing reputation as a pharma powerhouse – tracing it back to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s establishment of IDPL in 1965, which laid the foundation for the state’s pharmaceutical industry.
“Indira Gandhi’s initiative in 1965 is the reason why Hyderabad stands as a hub of bulk drug manufacturing. The city was also at the epicentre of Covid vaccine production,” he noted.
Government focus on innovation and skills
The Chief Minister said the state government is working to make Telangana a centre for knowledge and innovation. An Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) is being set up at Genome Valley to provide technical support for life sciences companies. He also said leading industry figures have joined the Board of Governors of the upcoming Young India Skills University, chaired by industrialist Anand Mahindra, to help align education and training with industry needs.
Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu said Eli Lilly’s decision to expand in Hyderabad highlights the state’s dynamic business ecosystem and its growing importance in advanced healthcare manufacturing.
Patrik Jonsson, Executive Vice President and President of Lilly International, said the investment reflects the company’s confidence in India’s role within its global network.
