Indian Test captain Shubman Gill’s childhood coach, Sukhwinder Tinku, is not surprised by the batter’s outstanding performances during the England tour. The 25-year-old has taken the cricketing world by storm, scoring two centuries and a double hundred in just his first two matches as captain.

Tinku praised Gill’s composure and understanding of the game while highlighting his greatest strength. Gill recently broke Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record for the most runs by an Indian in a single Test match. Gavaskar had scored 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971, a record that now stands second to Gill’s astonishing 430 runs at Edgbaston. He also became only the eighth Indian and the third captain to score centuries in both innings of a Test match.

“Shubman is just getting started. He’ll make more records. His technique is his greatest strength. Even as a youngster, he understood the game deeply and played with remarkable composure,” Tinku was quoted as saying by Odisha TV.

Gill on the brink of breaking Dravid-Kohli’s England record

Gill is now third on the list of Indian batters with the most Test runs in a single series England, having scored 585 runs. He trails only Rahul Dravid (602) and Virat Kohli (592), with three matches remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, giving him a strong chance to comfortably surpass both.

The Fazilka-born also has a chance to break one of cricket’s most legendary records, Sir Don Bradman’s 974 runs in a single series. Bradman achieved the feat during the 1930 Ashes, scoring 974 runs in just seven innings at an astonishing average of 139.14, a record that has remained untouched for 95 years.

In the ongoing Edgbaston Test, England needed 536 more runs to win and take a 2-0 lead in the series. At the end of the day’s play on the penultimate day, Harry Brook (15*) and Ollie Pope (24*) were at the crease. India, on the other hand, seek seven more wickets on the final day to level the series 1-1. Akash Deep has picked up a couple of wickets so far, while Siraj struck once in the final session the previous day.
