EXCLUSIVE: Celonis’ Kaushik Mitra explains how India’s expanding enterprises are creating opportunities in AI revolution

Celonis, a global leader in process intelligence, put forth big upgrades to its Celonis Process Intelligence Platform during the recently concluded annual Celosphere conference. The updated platform now connects easily with varied enterprise systems.

In an exclusive interaction with Zee Business, Kaushik Mitra, Vice President and Head of India GTM at Celonis, spoke at length about how its business is shaping up, why so much stress is being laid on India and more.

How has the business of Celonis been shaping up so far?

Celonis is into what we call Process Intelligence, and we work very closely with customers on their AI deployments, where process intelligence forms a bedrock for the deployment of AI. From that perspective, we consider India as the AI and PI epicentre, and I see a very positive uptick for business in India.

We have been here for the past year with our go-to-market initiatives. We are working with our Indian enterprises, which are now part of the global 2000 giants. We are obviously working with our global capability centres, which are large organisations globally headquartered but having their GCC in India. So I see a very positive outlook in the go-to-market for India.

During the recent press briefing, it was mentioned that Celonis’ workforce in India will see a surge…

I think Carsten Thoma – President of Celonis – has spoken about it, so I wouldn’t go there. However, one thing that I can say is that we would be expanding in multiple areas, which not only includes our go-to-market. We have a Celonis garage, which is an innovation labs that value engineering services. Hence, there is a lot of excitement around this. So yes, we are focusing on India as a region.

What makes India a crucial market?

India has always been at the forefront of the digital adoption curve. If you look at the success of our digital platforms, we feel that with AI coming in, this is possibly the best time for us to have a PI AI combination and focus on India.

This is because we believe that PI is the main bedrock, and it gives a context for AI to succeed. Hence, this is the right time for us to invest in India. If you look at the other side, the Indian enterprises are really growing very large, and there’s a great opportunity to be part of their AI journey. So we find all of this converging towards an investment in India.

Can you give us some insight into the growth strategy Celonis is focusing on these days?

As I said, there are two parts to the story. One is the GCC and the other is India’s enterprises. However, our growth is pivoted around industry strategy. So, we would be focusing on auto manufacturing.

Auto manufacturing, consumer products, pharma, retail, BFSI – all of these are the industries where we have great user cases globally, and we are deploying them in India. So our pivot is around the industries and AI. Our strategy will be based on it.

Apart from India, are there more markets that you would also be focusing on in the upcoming months?

My focus is entirely on India because I think I have my hands full with India. Globally, the organisation is looking at multiple geographies. India is an exclusive region, and obviously, we’re expecting growth in all of them.

What do you think gives Celonis an edge over other players in the space?

We are the category creator and the inventor of process mining. We started in 2011 and have always been ahead and been rated as a leader by Gartner Forester and Everest. We always believed that with the AI revolution, it’s PI which will make the difference, and that’s where we have the cutting edge. We have our readymade apps, which can be deployed.
