The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday called upon Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to demonstrate genuine remorse over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots by expelling senior leaders Jagdish Tytler, Kamal Nath, and Sam Pitroda from the party.
The demand followed Rahul’s remarks during an interactive session held at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University in the United States on April 21. Responding to a question on the 1984 riots and the Congress’ relationship with the Sikh community, Rahul said the party had made “a lot of mistakes” at a time when he was not involved in politics. He added that he was “more than happy to take responsibility for everything it had done wrong.”
Referring to these comments, BJP national spokesperson RP Singh told news agency PTI, “If he actually meant what he said and is willing to take responsibility for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, he should expel Jagdish Tytler, Kamal Nath from the Congress. He should also expel Sam Pitroda, who had said ‘hua toh hua’ (whatever happened, happened) about the riots.”
“If you want to repent, then repent completely. Such a half-hearted response will not be enough,” Singh added. “If you really feel that a mistake was committed, you correct it. You expel Jagdish Tytler, Kamal Nath and Sam Pitroda from the Congress.”
Rahul Gandhi Now Being Ridiculed Around The World: Amit Malviya
During the session at Brown University, a Sikh student questioned Rahul on the steps he was taking to reconcile with the Sikh community, while also recalling Rahul’s previous remarks during a visit to the US. The student referred to Rahul’s claim that his political struggle was about whether Sikhs would be allowed to wear turbans in India.
Sharing a clip from the interaction on social media platform X on Saturday, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya commented, “’You haven’t reconciled with the Sikhs’, a young man tells Rahul Gandhi to his face, reminding him of the unfounded fear-mongering he engaged in during his last visit to the US.”
