Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Hemang Badani revealed the reason behind giving a chance to Karun Nair in the last game against the Mumbai Indians. The former India player shared an interesting story about the Vidarbha batter who has been making waves in the cricketing world with his consisten performances.
There was plenty of speculation regarding whether Nair would get a game in the IPL this season since the Capitals had already found a winning combination without the 33-year-old batter in the XI. However, an injury to Faf du Plessis meant that he got his chance as an impact subsitute and he played an impressive knock of 89 off 40 against Mumbai Indians.
Coach Badani revealed that Nair was itching to get a game this season and pestered the coaching staff by constantly asking when he would get his chance.
“This lad has not played the IPL in the last three years. He’s only got nine First-Class hundreds this year. He was itching for a chance. Waiting to get onto the park. He has been bothering me ‘When am I going to get a game? Will I get this one?’ Even in the nets, he kept asking can I have a little more time in the middle. He has been itching to play, and that was something special,” Badani said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Karun Nair’s stellar domestic year
Nair had a dream season while representing Vidarbha in domestic cricket as Hh scored 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy this season and 255 runs at an average of 42.50 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
