Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi refuted the allegations levelled by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s regarding his visit to Pakistan “on the invitation of the Interior Ministry.”
Gaurav Gogoi, who has been recently appointed as Assam’s new Congress chief, said he visited Pakistan in 2013 as his wife Elizabeth Colburn, a Public Policy specialist, worked in the country for a year in 2011.
The Congress leader hit out at the Assam CM’s allegations, calling it the “plot of a C-grade Bollywood movie.”
“About 14–15 years ago, my wife, a well-known expert in public policy, was involved in an international initiative addressing climate change in South Asia. As part of that work, she spent a year in Pakistan and then came to India in 2012–13, where she has been working ever since. In 2015, she took up a new job,” the Congress leader said.
HERE COMES CONFESSION from CONgress MP Gaurav Gogoi- “About 14-15 yrs ago, my wife, worked on international project in South Asia focused on climate change. She spent 1 yr in Pakistan before returning to India around 2012-13. I also went with her once, in 2013…”

“So if, I went to Pakistan with her 11-12 years back. These people (BJP) are involved in defamation. So, they are using this issue to make a C-grade Bollywood movie, which they are going to release in September 10… I have a question, if according to their allegations, we did anything wrong or illegal, then who is in power in the last 11 years,” he added.
He said that if someone visits Pakistan, then there are intensive investigations and added that, being an opposition leader, the government has every detail about him.
Assam CM Himanta Sarma had hit out at Gaurav Gogoi saying the Congress leader visited Pakistan on the invitation of the country’s Interior Ministry, which heads the ISI.
श्री गौरव गोगोई ISI के निमंत्रण पर पाकिस्तान गए थे, और लौटकर Rafale की ख़रीद का भी विरोध किया था।

“He has gone to Pakistan at the invitation of the Interior Ministry. And ISI is under the Interior Ministry…If I am invited by Cultural Ministry, Sports Ministry, it is a different thing. If I am invited by the Interior Ministry of Pakistan and if I go there without informing the government of India, you can imagine that the crime of Jyoti Malhotra is nothing,” Himanta Sarma said.
In a post on X, the CM also said that there are credible inputs and documented information to suggest that Gogoi maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment.
Finally , Congress MP Shri Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan.
But let us be very clear — this is just the beginning, not the end.
What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented…

“What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Shri Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment,” Himanta said in a post on X.
“The Government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public on 10th September, once the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concludes its comprehensive inquiry. The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth — and they shall have it, in full,” he added.
The Assam CM and the BJP have been attacking Gogoi over his wife’s alleged connection with Pakistan’s spy agency ISI. Sarma earlier said Gogoi’s British wife Elizabeth Colburn had travelled 19 times between India and Pakistan.
