West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday asserted that any attempt to prevent Ram Navami processions across the state would be met with strong resistance. Accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of appeasing a particular community, Adhikari claimed that her tenure was nearing its end.
“Hindus will reign in Hindustan, and those who work for Hindus will reign in West Bengal. The situation in the state will be similar to that of Bangladesh if Mamata Banerjee remains in power. The days of her rule are numbered. Hindus will not accept her blatant appeasement of one community and attempts to crush Ram Navami celebrations any more,” Adhikari stated, as reported by news agency PTI.
According to Adhikari, over 20,000 processions will be held across the state on April 6 to mark Ram Navami, with an estimated one crore Hindus participating.
He further alleged that incidents of violence against Hindus in the state resembled attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. “Several places of worship of the Hindu community were vandalised in the state during the last Durga Puja. Jihadi elements are behind such incidents, and some Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders were aiding and abetting them,” he claimed.
Referring to the recent clashes in Birbhum’s Sainthia on the day of Holi, Adhikari accused the TMC government of attempting to cover up the violence. “On the day of Holi, attacks were carried out on Dalits by jihadis in Sainthia. But no action was taken against the perpetrators. Internet services were suspended to cover up the violence against the ‘Sanatanis’. Discussion on it was not even allowed in the assembly,” he alleged.
Adhikari also criticised Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee for disallowing a discussion on a BJP adjournment motion regarding the Holi violence.
According to The Times of India (TOI), the speaker permitted BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh to read out a portion of the motion but later ruled that references to “Hindus” and “Hindutva” were inappropriate for debate in the House.
“We don’t need this anti-Hindu regime. We want to know why the administration kept mum and suppressed the actual incident during a festival like Holi. Our chief whip wanted a discussion on the adjournment motion on this, but this anti-Hindu government does not want the truth to come out,” Adhikari said, as quoted by TOI.
“In which country are we living where the word ‘Hindu’ cannot be included in a motion drafted by democratically elected people’s representatives?” he asked.
Adhikari’s remarks have sparked controversy, particularly after his recent statement that Muslim MLAs of the TMC would be “thrown out” of the assembly if the BJP came to power. His comments had drawn sharp criticism from Mamata Banerjee.
‘You Are Importing Fake Hinduism’: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee To BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari
Reacting to his statements, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, “Your imported Hindu dharma is not supported by the Vedas or by our seers. How can you deny the rights of Muslims as citizens? This is nothing but a fraud. You are importing fake Hinduism.”
“I have the right to protect Hindu dharma, but not your version of it. Please don’t play the Hindu card,” she added in the assembly.
CM Mamata reiterated that India is a secular and pluralistic nation where everyone has the right to practise their religion freely. “The duty of the majority is to protect the minority. We must protect our country’s sovereignty and secularism. I love all religions, and we condemn any political party’s attempts to spread hatred against any community,” she asserted.
With the state assembly elections scheduled for next year, the BJP and TMC are locked in an increasingly heated political battle, particularly over religious and cultural issues. As West Bengal gears up for Ram Navami, tensions are expected to remain high, with both parties aggressively positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
