Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that India’s forward-looking policies and visionary leadership have laid the groundwork for innovation, helping the country emerge as a global force in artificial intelligence (AI) and technology.
Addressing the AI Bharat Shakti event– the prelude to the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026–Sitharaman said India is undergoing a “historic phase” where governance and policy decisions are being implemented faster than ever, IANS reported.
“Several things can remain on paper, but when execution happens under visionary leadership, it brings real change,” the finance minister said, highlighting that the synergy between dynamic governance and progressive policymaking is propelling India’s digital transformation.
Sitharaman credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014 for enabling a technology-driven revolution across sectors. “Between 2014 and today, several policy enablers have strengthened governance and created an ecosystem for innovation,” she noted.

The finance minister said India’s robust institutional and policy framework has been key to positioning the nation as a global hub for emerging technologies such as AI.
She also acknowledged the contribution of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, praising his long-standing vision for technology-led growth and recalling his role in developing Hyderabad into an IT hub.

“India today is in a phase where policy is pushing ahead much before many others can even absorb it. This has created healthy competition among states, which is ultimately good for the country,” she said.
The minister concluded that such proactive governance will be vital to India’s long-term vision. “Without enabling policies and forward-thinking leadership, we cannot reach our dream of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. But with the vision we have today, we are well on our way,” Sitharaman added.
