IndiGo issues apology as flight cancellations continue; DGCA seeks answers

IndiGo has issued a public apology after two days of widespread flight disruptions across its network, even as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) continues to closely monitor the situation.

The airline said its teams are working with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA, BCAS, AAI and airport operators to stabilise operations at the earliest. Passengers have been advised to check the latest flight status before heading to airport.

What Did IndiGo Say in The Statement?

According to IndiGo’s official statement, the disruptions over the past 48 hours have had a cascading impact on schedules nationwide. The airline said it “deeply regrets the inconvenience caused” and is focused on restoring normalcy.

However, cancellations continue across major airports. At Delhi airport alone, 89 departures and 83 arrivals of IndiGo were cancelled since morning.

DGCA officials said cancellations at IndiGo have been elevated for several days. The regulator highlighted that from late November, the airline has been cancelling around 170–200 flights per day, which is significantly above normal.

The DGCA held a detailed review meeting where IndiGo was questioned on planning gaps ahead of the holiday travel period.

IndiGo admitted that there were planning errors during the implementation of FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limit) Phase-2 norms, especially around night-duty definitions and related restrictions.

These errors created an unexpected surge in crew requirements. The airline has sought temporary relief in certain FDTL provisions until 10 February 2026, and assured DGCA that full normal operations will be restored by that date.

The regulator has directed IndiGo to accelerate pilot and crew hiring. The airline will now have to submit an update on hiring progress every 15 days.

Government officials said the focus is on avoiding future disruptions, especially during the high-demand travel season. The aviation ministry is also reviewing the possibility of granting limited relaxation in FDTL norms for airlines, citing operational pressures.

Officials said flight cancellations may continue for the next 2–3 days, after which IndiGo plans to stabilise operations by reducing flight numbers starting 8 December.

The government expects the situation to begin improving gradually from tomorrow. Another review meeting with other airlines is scheduled for Friday at 11 am, where fare movements and capacity utilisation are also likely to be discussed.
