Avesh Khan’s lethal bowling in the last over helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday, April 19.

Opting to bat first, Lucknow lost their in-form batters Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran inside the first six overs. Rishabh Pant also perished in the eighth over as LSG were reeling at 54/3. However, Aiden Markram and Ayush Badoni resurrected the innings, forging a 76-run stand off 49 balls. Markram made 66 off 45 balls, while Badoni amassed a 34-ball 50.

However, Abdul Samad’s blitzkrieg (30 off 10 balls) in the death overs helped the visiting side finish with a commendable total of 180/5. Wanindu Hasaranga was the best bowler on show for the Royals as he finished with figures of 2/31 in his four overs.

In reply, Rajasthan got off to a dazzling start thanks to the left-handed duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The latter, who became the youngest player to make his IPL debut at the age of 14, started his career in the cash-rich league with a six off Shardul Thakur. Suryavanshi and Jaiswal took the LSG bowlers to the cleaners during their partnership of 85 inside nine overs.

Suryavanshi was dismissed for a 20-ball 34, bringing Nitish Rana to the crease. The Uttar Pradesh batter fell cheaply as Lucknow started pulling things back. Stand-in captain Riyan Parag joined forces with Jaiswal and wrestled the momentum back in RR’s favour. They added 62 runs off 43 balls as RR cruised towards the 181-run target.

However, both batters fell in quick succession to Avesh Khan, and the job was left to finishers Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel. RR needed just nine runs to win off the final over. Avesh conceded just three runs off the first two balls before taking the wicket of Hetmyer.

The next three balls yielded only three runs as Avesh bowled with a lot of grit and determination. The Royals finished on 178/5, losing the clash from a commanding position.
