Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made full use of the batting-friendly conditions at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, March 23, as they amassed a massive total of 286/6 in their 20 overs against Rajasthan Royals in the second match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Riyan Parag, leading the Royals for the first time, faced trial by fire after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma continued from where they left off in IPL 2024. The two left-handed batters amassed 45 runs in the first three overs. Maheesh Theekshana provided the first breakthrough in the fourth over, picking up the wicket of Abhishek, who made 24 off 11 balls.
Debutant Ishan Kishan joined forces with Head and they forged an 85-run stand off just 39 balls. The latter belted 67 runs off 31 balls before being dismissed by Tushar Deshpande. However, Kishan continued bludgeoning the Rajasthan bowlers with Nitish Kumar Reddy for company. They put on a 72-run stand off just 29 balls as Parag was left searching for answers. Theekshana came back for his final over and broke the lethal partnership by dismissing Reddy. The Sri Lankan spinner finished his spell with two wickets in his kitty but it cost him 52 runs.
Heinrich Klaasen linked up with Kishan and they started the Sunrisers’ charge in the backend of the innings. Jofra Archer’s comeback match for the Royals turned out to be horrific as he conceded 76 runs off his four overs without picking up a wicket. This turned out to be the most expensive spell in IPL history.
Klaasen played a breathtaking cameo, hitting five fours and one six in his 14-ball knock of 34 runs. After he was dismissed by Sandeep Sharma in the 19th over, all eyes were on Kishan, who was nearing a maiden IPL century. The wicketkeeper-batter hit back-to-back sixes in the penultimate over before taking a couple to bring up his century off just 45 balls.
Tushar Deshpande picked up two wickets and conceded two boundaries as Sunrisers fell just one run short of equalling the record for the highest team total in IPL history which they set last year. Kishan finished unbeaten on 106 off 47 deliveries, belting 11 fours and six sixes.
