Mahela Jayawardene shared the reason behind using Rohit Sharma as an impact substitute in MI’s matches in the IPL 2025.
Ahead of the 56th match of the 18th edition of the league, the MI Head Coach mentioned that Rohit is being chosen only for batting, as he has been carrying a niggle he suffered in the Champions Trophy 2025.
“Rohit Sharma is carrying a niggle since the Champions Trophy,” said Jayawardene as quoted by the Times of India.
Rohit not featuring on the field in the majority of the matches led to speculations over his fitness. While he has been batting well in the ongoing season with good running between the wickets, his absence in the field raised questions.
Rohit has fielded in some of the matches. In the match against Rajasthan Royals, he fielded for seven overs before Karn Sharma replaced him. Likewise, in the match against DC in Delhi, he was in the field for a fairly long time. Barring these games, he has not fielded a lot.

How Rohit Sharma got injured in the Champions Trophy 2025?
On the 23rd of February 2025, India faced Pakistan in the battle of arch-rivals in the Champions Trophy. During the match, Sharma reportedly tweaked his hamstring and walked off the field for a few overs. Some reports had claimed at the time that he could miss the last league match against New Zealand, as India had booked their spot in the semifinal.
However, Ryan ten Doeschate had nullified such reports before the match between India and New Zealand on March 2. The Team India assistant coach claimed Rohit was fine to go, pointing out that the Indian captain batted and fielded well. He claimed Rohit had the injury earlier and knew how to manage it.
“He’s all right. As you can see, he’s batting, and he did a little bit of fielding earlier. It’s an injury he’s had before, so he knows how to manage it well, and he’s on top of it,” Ryan ten Doeschate said as quoted by NDTV ahead of the match between India and New Zealand in the CT 2025.
