IPL 2025: Sanju Samson fined for slow over-rate during GT vs RR match

Rajasthan Royals (RR) Captain Sanju Samson has been fined for INR 24 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 23 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

As this was his team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.

However, under Riyan Parag’s leadership, RR committed its first over-rate penalty this IPL when Samson was limited to playing as an impact player due to a finger injury.  Last month, Parag was fined INR 24 lakh for the first infraction against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

After winning their last two games in a row, RR suffered their third defeat of the season in five games, which included their second offence.  Right now, they are ranked eighth in the standings.

Talking about the match, after winning the toss, Rajasthan Royals’ captain Sanju Samson chose to bowl first against the hosts. The GT batters, after losing their captain Shubman Gill early in the match, put up a score of 217 runs for the visitors courtesy Sai Sudharsan’s 82 off just 53 balls. 

On the other hand, no one from the Royals could score much, which could have saved the team from this loss. After Sanju Samson’s 41 off 28 balls, only Shimron Hetmyer could score 52 off 32 but it couldn’t meet up to the expectations and lead the team to a victory.
