IPL 2025: Suryakumar Yadav explains bringing batting evolution for new-age T20 approach

Suryakumar Yadav opened up on the evolution of T20 cricket in the last few years and how he changed his batting accordingly in an interaction ahead of the Eliminator of the IPL 2025 between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in New Chandigarh. The star batter indeed agreed that T20 cricket has changed slightly in the last few years.

The unorthodox batter claimed that the way of scoring and striking in the middle has changed. He claimed that his strike rate before the pandemic was around 140-150. However, he added that there was a need to change his batting to be the best. The star batter said that he had a lot of match simulations and executed innovative shots to become a completely different batter.

“Mere hisaab se T20 format ka halka sa change hua (In my opinion, T20 cricket has changed slightly). Striking-wise, run banaane ke tareeke (The way of scoring runs), everything changed a little bit. Pehle hum jab batting karte the (Earlier when we used to bat), I used to bat with a strike rate of 140-150,” Suryakumar told Star Sports in a video uploaded on social media

“Post 2020-21, I realized that if you want to be the best, wo 3-4 saal toh khel liya maine (I played 3-4 seasons before that fine), and asked myself what do I need to do? Go back to the drawing room and do a lot of match simulations. All the innovative shots you’re seeing have mostly come after the change in my game in 2020,” the Indian captain added.

I don’t try anything different in the nets: Yadav

Suryakumar added that his focus was to concentrate on the areas in which he could score more runs and be a step ahead of his opposition captains, players, and captains. The unorthodox batter claimed that he practiced a lot of unorthodox shots and implemented them in his games irrespective of the bowler, and felt it helped him evolve as a better version of himself.

“Aur kaun sa area hai jo ground mai utilize kiya jaa sakta hai acche se? Kahaan pe runs bana sakte hai? (Which area of the ground can I utilize the most to score runs?) How can I be a step ahead of other teams, captains, and bowlers? Is there a place where I can keep scoring runs and not get dismissed? These were the questions I asked myself,” the MI batter added.

“From 2021 and 2022, I started playing these shots and became completely different. I kept backing myself irrespective of who was bowling. I always enjoyed what I did during the practice sessions to replicate the same during the game. I don’t try anything different in practice sessions,” the star player concluded.
