IPL teams who waited the Longest to win their first trophy

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the toughest T20 franchise leagues since its inception in 2008. The tournament features some successful international players and teams who are adored and supported by the fans.

The fans enjoy celebrating the success, and more so when the team finally wins the tournament after a long struggle. This is the year when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have finally broken their jinx and won their maiden title under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. 3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 5 years (First title – 2012)

The Kolkata Knight Riders had struggled to find their feet in the first three years of the IPL, finishing outside the top four. The wait finally came to an end in 2012 under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, when they beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the finals at Chepauk. This win reinvented the once-struggling Kolkata franchise into one of the best teams in the tournament. The Boys in Purple went on to become champions in 2012 and 2014 as well.

2. Mumbai Indians – 6 years (First title – 2013)

Though the Mumbai Indians might have always been the biggest franchise in the league, they have had a struggling period from 2008 to 2011. Their successful journey finally started when they lifted the trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, beating the then two-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Mumbai franchise is now among the best teams in the tournament, having won five titles, winning the other four trophies in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 18 years (First title – 2025)

June 3 will now be remembered forever by every player and fan who has given their heart and support to the Men in Red. Apart from taking 18 seasons to win the trophy, some major heartbreaks took place in 2009, 2011, and 2016. The struggles finally came to an end at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where the franchise beat the Punjab Kings by a margin of six runs. It is safe to say that the dream of Bengaluru and Virat Kohli has finally come true in the 18th season of the tournament.
