Karnataka Man Killed In Mob Lynching Over ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ Slogan, Over 10 Arrested

Over 10 people were arrested after a man died following lynched by a mob for reportedly chanting “Pakistan Zindabad” during a local cricket match in the Mangaluru district of Karnataka on Sunday.

As per Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara, the victim did not die immediately but succumbed to his injuries later. He added that arrests have been made so far, and a detailed report is underway.

“An incident of mob lynching has been reported involving an unidentified individual. I was informed that there are reports he was shouting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ during a local cricket match, which led some people to beat him. He didn’t die on the spot but passed away later. I’m yet to receive the full report. Around 10 to 12 people have been arrested, and further investigation is underway,” PTI quoted the state minister as saying.

The incident unfolded around 3 pm on Sunday near the Bhatra Kallurti temple in Kudupu village, on the outskirts of Mangaluru, during a cricket event where 10 teams and more than 100 players participated.

Witnesses disclosed that the violence escalated with a scuffle between the victim and a man identified as Sachin, and later, it quickly turned into a group assault. Meanwhile, some bystanders tried to stop them, but a section of the crowd continued to beat the man with kicks and sticks.

Police were notified about the incident around 5.30 PM after the body of the victim was found near a temple.

Post-mortem Confirms Victim’s Death Due To Internal Bleeding

Reacting to the incident, the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that the victim’s death was confirmed following a post-mortem conducted on April 28.

“Initially, the police registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation after the body was found near the temple grounds. A post-mortem conducted on April 28 confirmed that the death was due to multiple blunt force injuries and lack of medical attention,” Agarwal said.

Later that evening, fresh details surfaced revealing that the man had been assaulted during the match. A post-mortem at Wenlock District Hospital confirmed his death was due to internal bleeding and shock resulting from multiple blows to his back. Investigators also noted injuries on his limbs, back, buttocks, and genitals, reportedly caused by wooden sticks.

“The main accused, identified as Sachin, a resident of Kudupu, is already in our custody. The section invoked in this case is very stringent—if proved, the accused, either individually or as a group, can face life imprisonment or even the death penalty. We invoked this section under the BNS as more than five people were involved in the crime,” Agarwal added.

The case was filed based on a complaint by 33-year-old local resident Deepak Kumar. Nineteen individuals have been named in the FIR, with more suspects expected to be identified through CCTV footage and mobile data analysis.
