‘Kiraye Ke Tattu’: Union Minister Hardeep Puri Slams Pro-Khalistan Protests In Canada Ahead Of

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday slammed the recent pro-Khalistan protests in Canada ahead PM Modi’s visit for the G7 Summit, calling the demonstrators “kiraye ke tattu (hired stooges),” urging that they not be “taken seriously”.

Puri, while speaking to reporters on Monday, was asked about the protests, to which he said that the pro-Khalistani supporters were getting “funding from the neighbouring country,” referring to Pakistan. However, he added that these supporters turned on Islamabad when their funding stopped.

“One more video is going viral in which these people are protesting against the neighbouring country after they did not get funding from them,” Puri said.

“Yeh jo kiraye ke tattu hain (These are hired stooges). Don’t take them seriously,” he said.

Puri made the remarks while inaugurating an exhibition on the PM Modi-led government completing 11 years and 100 days of the Delhi Government at the Delhi BJP headquarters at 14, Pant Marg in Lutyens’ Delhi.

His remarks came as Khalistani supporters held a massive rally in various parts of Canada, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be going to attend the G7 Summit on his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney’s invitation.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month,” PM Modi has said in a post on social media, confirming that he had received the invite.

He added, “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

PM Modi is currently in Cyprus as part of a three-nation visit. He is scheduled to arrive in Canada to attend the G-7 summit on Alberta from Cyprus on the second leg of his visit. The summit, which will be PM Modi’s 6th consecutive participation in the Group of Seven’s gathering, will be held on June 16 and 17.

India-Canada ties hit an all-time low in 2023 after former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleged a potential Indian link in the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada’s invitation to PM Modi now is being viewed as Ottawa’s intent to repair the ties with New Delhi.
