Following a poor IPL 2025 campaign, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have mutually parted ways with head coach Chandrakant Pandit and bowling coach Bharat Arun, ending a three-year stint for both coaches.
Chandrakant Pandit, regarded as one of India’s most successful domestic coaches, came on board during the 2023 season. Meanwhile, Bharat Arun, who previously served as India’s bowling coach from 2014 to 2021, joined the Kolkata-based franchise in the 2022 season.
Both of them played a big role in guiding the franchise to its third IPL title in 2024. However, the team failed to replicate that success in the 2025 season, finishing eighth on the points table with just five wins from 14 matches. KKR’s title defense under new captain Ajinkya Rahane fell apart due to inconsistent performances, missed opportunities, and internal issues. Their playoff hopes ended after a rain-washed game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The franchise put up a heartfelt post for their departing coaches.
“THANK YOU CHANDU SIR Mr. Chandrakant Pandit has decided to explore new opportunities and will not continue as Head Coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. We are thankful for his invaluable contributions – including leading KKR to the TATA IPL Championship in 2024 and helping build a strong, resilient squad. His leadership and discipline have left a lasting impact on the team. We wish him all the very best for the future,” the KKR Instagram post read.
Abhishek Nayar likely to be promoted to more prominent role in KKR coaching setup
Under Pandit’s tenure, KKR found future stars like Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana, and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy made a comeback to the Indian team. However, reports of issues within the dressing room surfaced in IPL 2025. Pandit’s disciplinarian style reportedly created problems, with a controversial incident involving an overseas player and his national teammate grabbing headlines.
On the other hand, Bharat Arun, who joined KKR in 2022, was important in strengthening the team’s bowling unit. However, there have been rumors linking him to Chennai Super Kings, although CSK officials have denied any such development.
With both coaches stepping down, KKR is reportedly looking to restructure its coaching unit. Abhishek Nayar, currently serving as assistant coach, is likely to be promoted to a more prominent role. Former captain Eoin Morgan has also been mentioned as a potential candidate to join the think tank.
