Lok Sabha To Initiate Motion For Removal Of Justice Varma Over Corruption Charges: Kiren Rijiju

The motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, embroiled in a suspected graft case, will be taken up in the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Friday, reports news agency PTI, stating that it was agreed by all the parties to move unitedly in action against the alleged corruption in the judiciary. News agency PTI, quoting official sources, said that the opposition-sponsored notice for a similar motion in the Rajya Sabha has not been admitted in the Upper House, paving the way for the Lower House to initiate the exercise.

According to the report, Speaker Om Birla is expected to announce the three-member enquiry committee to probe the charge against the Allahabad High Court judge.

“We shouldn’t remain in any doubt, proceedings to remove Justice Yashwant Varma will begin in the Lok Sabha,” Rijiju said.

According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act, the proceedings will move to Rajya Sabha after they are over in Lok Sabha. Over 150 MPs of the ruling alliance as well as the opposition had signed the notice in Lok Sabha.

Earlier, Justice Varma was transferred to the Allahabad High Court in April this year after a bundle of cash was recovered from his house during a fire incident in March. The Supreme Court formed an in-house probe committee. It submitted its report to the then CJI Sanjeev Khanna on May 5. The report was then forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
