The Ministry of External Affairs is working out details with its counterpart in China to resume direct flights to the neighbouring country, said an official on Monday.
The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent tension in the diplomatic ties in view of the border stand-off had halted the operation of direct flights between the two countries.
Last month, the Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, Xu Wei, said that India and China are in constant talks to resume direct flights five years later.
Vumlunmang Vualnamm, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation said, “Discussions have started. The Ministry of External Affairs with their counterparts have reached to an in principle agreement to resume direct flights.”
“So now, the details will be worked out, the carriers who are involved from our side, we would like all their requirements to be fully met and with the guidance of MEA, we will make it happen,” the official told PTI.

Resumption Of Flight Between India And China
The announcement to resume flight operation between India and China was first made in Janaury this year by the Ministry of External Affairs following top diplomat Vikram Misri’s visit to China.
In the statement released after Misri’s China visit, the MEA said that both countries have agreed “in principle to resume direct air services between the two countries.”
Speaking on the development last month, Wei expressed confidence in the ties between the two nations. He said that a variety of events will be held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations while adding that “the spring of China-India relations is arriving”.
