‘Misplaced Generosity’: Shashi Tharoor Questions Kerala’s Aid To Turkey Amid Strained Ties

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called on the Kerala government to reconsider its earlier decision to provide Rs 10 crore in humanitarian aid to Turkey following the devastating 2023 earthquake. In light of recent developments in India-Turkey relations, Tharoor termed the gesture as “misplaced generosity.”

‘Misplaced Generosity’

Taking to social media platform X, Tharoor criticised Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government, pointing to Turkey’s alleged support for Pakistan during India’s recent military operation, dubbed Operation Sindoor. The operation was a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 civilians dead.

“I hope the Govt of Kerala reflects on its misplaced generosity, after seeing Turkey’s behaviour two years later! Not to mention that the people of Wayanad (just to take one Kerala example) could have used those ten crores far better,” Tharoor said. He specifically referenced Wayanad as an example of a region in need of development funds.

Kerala’s aid was initially announced in the state budget on February 8, 2023, by Finance Minister K N Balagopal, who said the funds were meant to support the victims of the catastrophic earthquake in Turkey.

However, bilateral ties between India and Turkey have deteriorated in recent times. Turkish backing of Islamabad, including reports of arms supplies during Operation Sindoor, has sparked diplomatic tensions. In response, New Delhi has taken several measures, including revoking operational clearance for Turkish aviation firm Celebi and encouraging economic disengagement through calls for trade boycotts.
