Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has once again found himself in the spotlight after delivering an animated speech in which he dramatically pledged that his name would cease to be Shehbaz Sharif if Pakistan failed to surpass India in economic development and progress.
During a public rally in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, on Saturday, Sharif—known for his animated oratory—was seen punching the air, thumping his chest, and even jumping on the stage while making his declarations.
“My name won’t be Shehbaz Sharif if due to our efforts Pakistan does not leave India behind in terms of development and progress,” he proclaimed to the crowd as seen in a viral video.
If I don’t defeat #India, my name is not Shehbaz Sharif,” says PM Shehbaz, pledging to outpace regional rivals like India in development. The Prime Minister went a step further by swearing on the life of his elder brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
“I am Nawaz Sharif’s fan, his follower. Today, I swear on his blessed life that till the day I have the energy and the will to do so, we will all work together to take Pakistan to greatness and defeat India,” he added.
According to Dawn News, Sharif also acknowledged the importance of eliminating terrorism for Pakistan’s progress. “The enemies of Pakistan, including Fitna al Khwarij, were carrying out terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, and security forces were offering sacrifices in the fight against terrorism,” he said, urging the nation to remember their contributions, as quoted by Dawn.

Sharif’s speech, however, did not go down well on social media as many ridiculed his grandiose claims. Several Indian users took to social media to mock the Pakistani Prime Minister.
“Naya naam sochna padega (You’ll need to think of a new name)”, one user quipped, referencing Sharif’s pledge.

Another remarked, “Awam ko murkh banane ke liye ye josh ka dikhawa karna padta hain. (One has to put on such a show of enthusiasm to fool the public.)”

A third user added, “Sir, comedy mein aap bahut aage nikal gaye hai, hum Indians bahut peeche reh gaye hain. Baki economy mein aap kam se kam 30 saal peeche hai, that too when the whole world is giving charity money to you. Otherwise, it’s 100 years. (Sir, you have surpassed us in comedy; we Indians have fallen behind. As for the economy, you are at least 30 years behind, and that too with global aid; otherwise, it would be 100 years.)”

Pakistan continues to struggle with economic challenges, with the country heavily indebted to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), China, and Arab states. Despite Sharif’s assurances, critics argue that Pakistan’s structural economic woes remain unresolved.
