Nagpur: Eight VHP, Bajrang Dal Members Arrested For Protest Against Aurangzeb Tomb

Eight workers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal have been arrested on Wednesday in connection with the Nagpur violence case.

The VHP and Bajrang Dal workers surrendered before the Kotwali police after which they were arrested them and produced before the court.

The Maharashtra police has registered FIRs against office-bearers of the VHP and Bajrang Dal for allegedly hurting religious sentiments during their protest in Nagpur demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Sambhajinagar.

Earlier in the day, the police arrested Fahim Shamim Khan, a local leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), who was identified as the alleged mastermind behind the violence on Monday.

Meanwhile, the police continue search operation for suspects in Nagpur where violence had occurred on Monday.

So far, the police have arrested more than 50 people in connection with the Nagpur violence. Nagpur Police Commissioner Virender Singal on Wednesday told reporters that investigations are underway to identify attackers and the role of the persons named in the FIR.

Thirty-three police personnel, including three DCP-rank officers, were injured on Monday night when mobs went on a rampage, damaging vehicles, hurling petrol bombs and stones at police, and attacking houses.

Rumours about a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions being burnt during protests led by VHP for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, was the prima facie trigger for violence.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the violence was premeditated as specific houses were targeted by mobs.
