Nat Sciver-Brunt named England women’s captain

Nat Sciver-Brunt has been named the skipper of England Women’s cricket team, taking over from Heather Knight. Knight, who led the team for nine years, was asked to step down following England record 16-0 loss to Australia in the multi-format Women’s Ashes in late 2024 and early 2025.

Sciver-Brunt, who was deputy to Knight, became an automatic choice due to her experience and great form in the WPL and for England at the highest level. Brunt, who debuted for England in 2013, has represented England in 12 Tests, 115 WODIs and 132 WT20Is. She has led England in 12 matches (11 T20Is and one ODI), with nine wins and three losses.

Meanwhile, she expressed gratitude after her appointment, termng it a proud moment. Sciver-Brunt recalled at her early days as the England player and stated that her goal was always to win matches for her side. She also expressed her excitement to work with Charlotte Edwards, with whom she worked in Mumbai Indians for three seasons.

“I’m really proud to take on the role of captain of the England Women’s team and it’s an honour to have been asked by Charlotte, someone I’ve always looked up to. Ever since I made my England debut back in 2013, all I have wanted to do is help the team in every way that I can. I will try my best to lead this team to success, whilst empowering them to be the best version of themselves,” Sciver-Brunt said.

Sciver-Brunt has been named PCA Player of the Year in 2017 and 2022 and has also won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year tfor 2022 and 2023. She had a brilliant run in white-ball cricket in 2023 and was included in the ICC Women’s ODI and T20 Teams of the Year in 2023. Sciver-Brunt also became the first player to score 500 runs in a single Women’s Premier League edition.

“We have a really talented group, and we have a group that’s united. It’s a team I believe in and a team that can have a lot of success together. It’s hugely exciting to be working with Charlotte having had the pleasure of working with her in the last three years at Mumbai Indians. Her love of cricket and passion for the England Women’s team is inspiring and I’m excited to see where this partnership leads us,” Sciver-Brunt added.

She’s thoughtful, resilient and driven by getting the best out of herself and everyone around her. Nat is immensely well-respected in the group and I know she will form an exciting and fruitful partnership with Charlotte,” Connor added.
