Nipun Aggarwal to be Air India Express chairman; Campbell Wilson steps down as Chairman

Tata Group’s consolidated airline operations, Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson will relinquish his position as Chairman of Air India Express. He will be succeeded by Nipun Aggarwal, who is the current Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of the airline.

Wilson, who has served as Chairman since June 2022, will also vacate his position on the Air India Express board. The development follows just over six months after the official merger of Air India Express with AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India.

The announcement was made by Wilson in an internal communication to employees on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

In his message, he highlighted that the past 18 months have seen the completion of critical structural reforms aimed at rebuilding the Air India Group, which includes Air India (recently merged with Vistara in November 2024) and Air India Express.

“With much of the foundational work now accomplished, the next phase involves fully leveraging and optimising the Group’s fleet, network, sales channels, distribution strategies, and loyalty programs,” Wilson stated.

“Accordingly, I believe the time is right for me to step aside as Chairman of the Air India Express Board and for Nipun Aggarwal—already a board member of AIX—to take on the role while continuing as Air India’s CCO, thereby enhancing coordination across the Group’s network and commercial initiatives,” he said. After this, Captain Basil Kwauk, Chief Operations Officer of Air India, is set to join the Air India Express board pending regulatory approval.

A senior executive at Air India Express described the boardroom change as a natural progression aligned with the airline’s strategic growth. “Campbell’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping a unified vision and purpose. With Air India Express now firmly positioned in the domestic and short-haul international markets, the focus is shifting towards achieving seamless coordination between network planning and commercial operations across both carriers,” the official said.

Wilson also said that “We have made substantial strides in improving collaboration between our full-service and low-cost operations, enhancing the overall performance and synergy within the Group,” adding, “I remain deeply invested in the progress of Air India Express and will fully support Nipun and Basil in their expanded responsibilities, while continuing to oversee the overall performance of the Air India Group,” Wil said.
